Understanding the Calls from 08 8958 6859
The phone number 08 8958 6859 / 0889586859 has raised several red flags among users, with multiple reports indicating it is associated with suspicious activity. Specifically, callers claiming to be from the government or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) discussing solar panel rebates have been noted. However, these claims have been linked to a pattern of potential scams that aim to elicit personal information under false pretenses.
User Experiences
Based on user reports, it seems that those receiving calls from this number frequently experience one of two scenarios: silence on the line or misleading questions about solar panels. Many individuals remarked on the distinct accents of the callers, identifying them as possibly being from overseas, notably India. This has further amplified concerns regarding the legitimacy of the calls.
- Scam Claims: Callers often represent themselves as being from the 'federal government’ or acting on behalf of supposed solar rebate schemes. Users expressed fears of being recorded during conversations where they were prompted to confirm their names.
- Concern for Personal Information: Several reports emphasised that the setup may be part of a strategic scam designed to record 'yes' answers, which could later be manipulated.
- No Response During Calls: Several users noted that, in some instances, a call would disconnect without any dialogue, leading to confusion and suspicion regarding the purpose of the call.
Conclusion and Response Strategy

Received a phone call asking if my name was Ian, I said yes, then went on to say they were calling from the federal government about solar panels. They asked if I have solar panels on my roof, I answered no. It was then I realised that I could be being recorded for yes/no answers, so I hung up. The person had an Indian accent. I suspect the call to be bogus and a scammer.
One of those calls where they call and are quiet on the phone and then hangs up. Multiple times.
