Details of the Scam
Predominantly, users describe interactions beginning on popular dating platforms. Rather than maintaining conversation through the dating site, they urge users to move over to messaging apps like WhatsApp. Here are the common tactics employed:
- Sending flattering photos to gain trust.
- Requesting the recipient to share messages or even gift cards under the pretense of purchasing children's gifts or allowing for a meetup.
- Providing a supposed address to meet, but in fact, the location is unreliable and often leads to abandonment.
Beware of the Signs
Typically, the communication escalates quickly, with the scammer applying a range of emotional manipulations. Some common red flags include:
- Shifting conversations off the original platform.
- Requests for money transfers or gift card numbers.
- A sudden change in tone to aggression or abuse when questioned about their motives.

Crikey, I got this strange call from someone claiming they just want to be mates with benefits while their husband is away. Definitely a scam—stay away!
I can confirm the other reports about this caller. A woman asked me if I wanted to meet up either today or tomorrow. I suggested a video call and requested some identification to verify her legitimacy, but she seemed quite dodgy.
The caller indicated that she has children and pressured me to purchase gift cards, insisting that I share the voucher numbers. She also provided a false address during the conversation.
Scam - supposedly a lady contacts you on a dating site, then gets you to message them on a 'Whats App' number. Sends a nice photo of a lady, wants to catch up that night, sends a street address and suburb, no number. I said only after an online video meeting and sent a video link. Replies 'Are you serious?' Then the person comes back abusive. Not sure what would have happened if I went to the address. Beware, definitely some sort of scam.
I received a suspicious message from this phone number. The sender seems to be targeting individuals on dating and personal advertisement websites.
This is a scam operation. They send messages leading you to a random address and prompt you to transfer money for them.
