When you choose to answer a call from an unknown number you should not be the first to speak other than to say “hello”.

You should not say who you are…. They should already know who you are or they ought not be calling! That seems rude? Unprofessional? Telephone etiquette has to adapt to the increasing predators or phone calling itself will continue to fade into oblivion (who’s to say if that’s bad).

Put the etiquette on the other proverbial foot… callers should be expected to establish who they are, that they know with reasonable inference that they know who they have called AND the purpose for their call. Never give out your personal information to someone who called you! They know who you are… you’re the only one that receives calls when someone dials that number. The number that shows up when they call you however, could be anyone.
