Unmasking the Scam Behind 0420 040 767

If you've received a call from the number 0420 040 767, there’s a strong chance you’ve encountered a scam operation. Reports suggest this number is linked to individuals masquerading as representatives from Telstra, trying to lure unsuspecting victims into revealing personal information.

What’s Behind the Call?

Based on user reviews, particularly a notable report dated 19 January 2022, the caller claimed that the individual’s Telstra internet line was susceptible to scams. However, when questioned about the name linked to the account, they fell short and misidentified it by using the recipient’s nickname—an unprofessional and suspicious move for purported representatives of a well-established company.

This interaction raises several red flags:

  • Generic Greeting: Scammers often avoid using personal details in calls to maintain their scripts.
  • Inaccurate Information: The caller claimed issues on a line that doesn't even belong to the recipient, indicating they're fishing for data.
  • Pressure Tactics: Many scam calls employ urgency, leveraging fear to manipulate responses based on assumed threats.

How to Handle Calls from This Number

If you find yourself contacted by 0420 040 767, here are some recommended steps to take:

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid giving any information to the caller. Instead, hang up or ignore the call.
  • Report the Call: Contact relevant authorities such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or your service provider.
  • Use Reverse Phone Lookup Australia: Utilize services like Reverseau to investigate any suspicious numbers and protect yourself from scams.
  • Spread Awareness: Inform friends and family about this number to help them stay vigilant.

Scam

I received a call from someone claiming to be from TELSTRA, stating that my internet line is at risk from scammers and they needed to take action. When I inquired about the account name associated with this supposed issue, they gave me my nickname. It’s highly suspicious for a legitimate company to use a nickname when addressing a customer. Also, I don’t even have a TELSTRA account. This is clearly a scam! F@#$ off, scammers!!!

About This Report

This page is part of the Reverseau Scam Intelligence Database, a community-driven dataset maintained by Reverseau since 2014. The database documents caller behaviour across Australian phone numbers based on first-hand user experiences.

Each entry is generated when individuals who received calls or messages from a number submit a report through our review form. Reports include a caller safety rating (1–5 scale) and a written account of the interaction. All submissions are moderated before publication.

The safety rating shown on this page reflects the collective assessment of 0420 040 767 by real users. It measures perceived caller risk, not the quality of this page. A low rating indicates that reporters consider this number likely to be associated with scam or spam activity.
