In today's digital age, phone scams are unfortunately becoming a common occurrence. The number 02 9874 2461 has raised alarm bells among users, with claims pointing towards a scam attempt where the caller impersonates the reputable telecommunications company known as Telstra.

On 25 March 2021, a user reported receiving a call from this number. The caller indicated they were from Telstra and strategically claimed that the user's internet was downloading excessive files. This classic tactic is often employed by scammers to instil fear and urgency, pushing unsuspecting victims to act without thinking critically. The user, recognising something was amiss, opted to end the conversation and promised to call back. However, their attempt to reach the number again resulted in a disconnection message from Optus, further solidifying suspicions about the legitimacy of the call.

The ruse of impersonating a reputable company like Telstra is a common technique used by fraudsters to gain access to sensitive information or to persuade individuals to make unnecessary payments.

So, how should you deal with calls from this number? Here are some tips:

  • Do not engage with the caller: If you suspect the caller is not legitimate, it's best to cut the conversation short.
  • Verify through official channels: Instead of calling back the number provided, search for the verified contact details of the organization and reach out to them directly.
  • Report the number: Make sure to report suspicious activity to consumer protection bodies or relevant authorities to help others avoid scams.

Caller advised they were from TELSTRA and that they had noticed that my internet was downloading excessive files. I think it was a scam and told them I would call back. When I tried to call the number back it said "OPTUS advises that the mobile number you are calling has been disconnected".

About This Report

Each entry is generated when individuals who received calls or messages from a number submit a report through our review form. Reports include a caller safety rating (1–5 scale) and a written account of the interaction. All submissions are moderated before publication.

The safety rating shown on this page reflects the collective assessment of (02) 9874 2461 by real users. It measures perceived caller risk, not the quality of this page. A low rating indicates that reporters consider this number likely to be associated with scam or spam activity.
