Concerned about calls from 02 9296 5698? This number has been reported as a scam, impersonating NAB to promote Coles Mastercard offers. Learn how to handle such calls effectively.

Understanding the Nature of Calls from 02 9296 5698

The phone number 02 9296 5698 / 0292965698 has emerged as a topic of concern among Australian users, being categorised primarily as a scam calling service. Users have reported numerous suspicious behaviours attributed to this number, indicating high levels of discontent and caution.

What Users Are Saying

Reports confirm that this number often claims to represent the National Australia Bank (NAB), specifically targeted at owners of Coles Mastercards. Callers, often described as having foreign accents, request personal information and appear to know the recipient's name. However, they do not provide verifiable credentials, which raises significant red flags.

Common Characteristics of the Scam

  • Callers frequently hang up without any interaction.
  • Many recipients receive recorded messages urging them to hold the line.
  • Requests for sensitive information that should already be known to the bank.
  • Repeated, unsolicited calls, leading many to view these as nuisance calls.

Why This Number is Classified as a Scam

From the analysis of numerous user reviews, it's clear that the overwhelming consensus is that 02 9296 5698 / 0292965698 is linked to a widespread telemarketing scam. The persistent nature of the calls, combined with the suspicious tactics used—like asking users to confirm personal details while neglecting to introduce themselves properly—hints at fraudulent intentions.

Moreover, although some reviews suggest a thin veil of legitimacy by acknowledging the connection between Coles Financial Services and NAB, the majority of feedback indicates a lack of authentic communication. Genuine financial institutions typically leave detailed messages and do not pressure customers over the phone for sensitive information.

What You Can Do

If you encounter a call from 02 9296 5698 / 0292965698, the best course of action is to ignore the call entirely or hang up immediately if you answer. It is advisable to block the number to avoid further harassment. Trust your instincts; if you feel uneasy about the nature of the call, do not engage.

For those who suspect they've received a scam call, you can report the number to local consumer protection agencies or the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). This way, you contribute to the collective effort of eliminating scams within Australia.

Conclusion

02 9296 5698 / 0292965698 is primarily regarded as a scam when it comes to promoting Coles Mastercard services falsely attributed to NAB. Users should remain vigilant and rely on verified communication channels for financial inquiries, thus keeping themselves safe from potential scams.

I also have a Coles Mastercard and receive calls from this number at least once a week, even though I've blocked it. The calls appear to originate from an Asian call center, and the diction of the callers is often difficult to understand. I usually end up hanging up quickly to avoid the conversation.

This number has called me multiple times and has never left a message. I won't return their calls unless they identify themselves first. If it were an important call from Coles MC or NAB, they have my email and postal address already, so calling without leaving a message is pointless.

I received a cold call from what they claimed was the Coles credit card service center. They offered me an "opportunity" to take cash from my credit card and pay it back over a period of 6 or 12 months at a low interest rate. This sounded suspicious and potentially problematic.

This number appears to be a scam, but they are very convincing. The caller had extensive details about my personal account and even sent a text message that looked like it was from ColesFS, the legitimate provider. After talking with them, it seems they are primarily trying to sell loans based on your credit card balance, so it might just be aggressive telemarketing rather than a scam.

Thank you for confirming this number for me. I've recently been getting multiple calls from it, which I tended to ignore. I get these calls all the time and sometimes they get crafty and use no caller id. I don't answer calls with no caller ID and if it is someone I know they know to leave a message. When I call back I get the automated message it is coles mastercard and it is not urgent. Well if it is not urgent you don't need to call. I did answer earlier this week about a payment I organised by ringing them but they rang the day after I had paid it to give me an update on my account. I appreciate your healthy scepticism but in this case Coles FINANCIAL services is the finance company set up to run Coles Mastercards and payments They used to be a subsidiary of Citibank Aust but have been taken over by the NAB. They're ringing to try and get you to take on more of NAB's financial products - technically legal, (unless you are on the 'Do Not Call' register) so not an actual scam.

I'd hang up on them all the same - unless you are desperate for more ways to give money to the banks??:-)
