Common Phrases and Tactics

Scam

This is a Microsoft flashing scam claiming the computer had been locked.

The screen appears black and silly me did ring the number. Eventually, a guy who sounded half asleep, answered the call. I did not provide any personal details. The guy explained he was from microsoft tech department and I should get in touch 'tomorrow' and he'll get a technician to 'fix' the computer. He also, quite cleverly (note change of tactic; friendly, understanding, patient, not asking for personal details), explained that no money would be requested, but that the computer had been hacked and needed to be fixed remotely.

Do not call the number. Do not provide any details. The computer most likely wasn't blocked. Delete history, clear cache, quit or force quit the computer. Keep virus protection up to date.
