Scam

Yes, got a similar call from "Jason O'Connor" from the "ATO". Dead give away scam. Used the term "Commonwealth Court" of which there is no such thing and then referred to the "local police department" which of course is a name that no one in Australia uses for the police. Idiots.

I also got a phone call from "Jason Connor" from this no from the ATO, threatening legal action & Police presence etc. I hung up and reported it to the ATO via 1800 008 540.

Scam

I was rung this morning by a male who claimed his name to be Jim Foster, although he had an accent, which sounded either Indian or Middle Eastern? He then said that I owed over $6000 to the Australian Taxation Office and that I was being charged with Tax Evasion and Fraud. If I did not pay this money the "local Police" would come to my residence. He was very aggressive and forceful; he told me that I could speak only when he had finished! When I tried to question him further, all he would say was the "debt" was from 2006 to 2016 and if I didn't pay I would need a criminal lawyer! Then he heard my husband in the background asking for the phone, suddenly the call ended, he'd hung up!... It seems they are targeting women, perhaps hoping to get hold of some elderly women, or other easy targets, and scaring them into it.

I spoke to the elderly lady across the road from me and she too had been receiving these calls, and they were indeed scams. I then rang the A.T.O. and they confirmed it was a scam and transferred me to their scam line and an operator took all the details I had. He even gave me a "case number" and his employee I.D. number, of course all are fake! Don't get caught, if you get a call report it to the A.T.O. get as many details as you can from them, including the phone number. I looked up this number and it is a landline based in N.S.W., possibly Armidale, looks like they're re-routing these calls from overseas via a landline here. If they try it on enough people, they will get some that will pay up. Please tell as many others as possible.
