Understanding the Scam Behind 02 6100 8667

In recent days, numerous Australians have reported receiving phone calls from the number 02 6100 8667, often claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The callers, typically with an Indian accent, inform unsuspecting victims that they are entitled to a tax refund—commonly quoted as $7600—due to an alleged overpayment of tax. These insidious calls often involve a case number and request that victims call back using the provided number.

Classification: A Clear Scam

Based on user reviews received from various individuals, this phone number is classified as a scam. Here’s why:

  • Consistent Narrative: Almost every report shares striking similarities, notably the exact refund amount of $7600 and the details of being contacted by supposed representatives from the ATO.
  • Pressure Tactics: The callers often provide case file numbers and insist on immediate callbacks, leading victims into a trap where personal information could potentially be disclosed.
  • False Credentials: Many callers use generic names like "Janet" or "Robert" and maintain a façade of legitimacy, which various users have debunked after contacting the ATO directly.
  • User Reactions: Most individuals express suspicions upon receiving these calls, and several have confirmed the scams by contacting official government channels.

How to Handle Calls from 02 6100 8667

If you receive a call from 02 6100 8667, it is crucial to follow these steps:

  • Do Not Engage: Hang up after recognising the call as a potential scam.
  • Verify Independently: If unsure, contact the ATO directly using official contact numbers from their website to verify any claims of owed funds.
  • Report the Incident: Report any suspicious calls to Scamwatch or your local authorities, helping protect others from falling foul to such scams.
  • Educate Others: Share this information with family and friends to warn them about the dangers associated with unsolicited calls regarding financial matters.

John.

Received a call from 02 6100 4210 informing me that the ATO was instigating proceedings against me and I had to ring the number to prevent prosecution. The ATO has said publicly that it doe snot do such busines over the phone. About time that number was shut down along with its users.

My mother got a call this morning from ATO claiming that she was due a $7600 reimbursement and to contact this number.

I also got a call from the "Tax Office" and was given this number to call to claim my $7600 reimbursement. I've worked for the ATO and it was obvious straight up this call was a scam. I phoned 02 6100 8667 out of curiosity but it just rang out. My guess is the scam is to try to trick people into giving out personal information in the initial phone contact, so it's fairly benign unless you fall for that. I don't see how this is the ATO's responsibility or that they can do even do anything about it. Moral of the story: don't give any information to a person in an unsolicited phone call.

Just got a call from 02 61008667. The lady, Rose (who was Indian), said she was calling from the tax department in Canberra. She said she was ringing to let me know that I was owed $7600 by the tax office because I had previously had too much tax deducted. She told me that I had to call this number and quote a case-file number she had given me. She was not able to answer my questions and when asked why this was not part of the regular tax lodgement she hung up on me. Bogus.

Just had a call from this Indian sounding lady, also a refund of $7600 promised, pension tax refund. Got an ID number and a direct number to the 'Tax Department'. When I rang the 'tax department' number I was put on hold. When I rang again I was told all the accountants were busy. Very SUSS if you ask me.

My mum has just come over to look this number up.

She had a call from a veronica smith. Same as above with the info from canberra taxation office and to ring 02 61008667. She didn't sound like a veronicca. Went to centerlink to see why she had been under paid $7.600.00.

Funny how the 2 people above have the same amount and info.

Scamers for sure.

I received a phone call from an Indian lady who alleged she was from the Australian Taxation office in Canberra. She told me that due to a new government policy, tax installments had been adjusted and I was entitled to a $7600.00 refund from the tax office. She told me to call 0261008667 and gave me a case file number to quote.

I suspect this is the same group that I frequently receive calls from. Sometimes they are the Microsoft Windows Service centre calling about a problem found with my PC, sometimes they are Telstra calling about a problem with my broadband service. Usually the day prior to the call, the phone rings and when answered a machine generated voice says "goodbye".
