What Do Users Report?
Multiple user reviews from late July 2024 highlight a modus operandi that involves automated messages with a heavy accent, often requiring the recipient to press certain numbers for language options. Many users stated they were left voicemails stating there was an "urgent document" awaiting collection, which is a common tactic used in scam calls to instill a sense of urgency.
Analysis of the Scam Attempt
- Impersonation of Government and Financial Institutions: Several reports have mentioned being contacted by individuals claiming to represent the Commonwealth Bank or other financial entities. This tactic aims to gain the trust of the recipient, making them more susceptible to scams.
- Suspicious Call Behaviour: Users reported receiving calls that were abruptly disconnected or left without a message, indicative of callers trying to verify if the number is active before launching a deeper scam.
- Language Barrier Tactics: The presence of Mandarin in these calls, coupled with the instructions given in broken English, suggests a targeted approach aimed particularly at individuals who may not strongly comprehend their rights and warnings against such calls.

I answered a call from this number, and the caller claimed they were from ANZ Bank. I immediately hung up, as I was already suspicious.
ID: 596750 - I received a recorded message allegedly from ANZ regarding a payment issue. The message prompted me to press 1 or 2, but I did not respond to the prompts and have since blocked the number.
This number called but didn’t leave any message, so I’ve blocked it. I really appreciate the insights from previous comments!
This is a suspected scam call. It featured a pre-recorded message that pretended to be from Commonwealth Bank.
Some pig called, claiming to be from the Commonwealth Bank regarding a recent payment on my card and wanted me authorize it. She just got through her rehearsed introduction - very nicely delivered in broken English - when I had a few words to say. She apparently didn't like my very informed comeback. I think she might be scarred for life. Block these pigs if they call.
I received a call that pretended to be from Commonwealth Bank, stating that there was a withdrawal of $1800 that needed to be confirmed. I did not press any buttons and the call was disconnected. Based on similar reports, it appears to be a scam.
I answered a call, but the caller hung up immediately. I suspect they may be trying to verify whether my phone number is still active.
I received a call claiming to be from the Ministry of Health. They provided some options before abruptly switching to speaking in Chinese. It's important to note that Australia does not have a 'Ministry of Health' in that capacity, and the manner of communication seemed unprofessional and suspicious. Clearly a SCAM call!

"English press two for Chinese Niha J Li Shi Wei book, Yi Ya Wen Jie Yaoi Bean. So Tongji Zao Chai Xin Ying Wen Hua Qing." Message2Text.
This the message that was left.

I received a voicemail stating that there is an urgent document waiting for collection. The message was delivered with an Asian accent, which raised my suspicions.
