Classification of 02 5119 8573

Based on user reports, this number falls into the category of a scam, specifically targeting individuals through impersonation. The intent is to either extract personal information or to create panic by referencing fictitious transactions.

The Nature of the Scam

Reports indicate that the callers operate by instigating fear regarding nonexistent purchases. On one occasion, a user reported receiving a call about a £2.99 bitcoin transaction on PayPal, despite having no account with the service. This tactic is designed to confuse potential victims and garner personal data under the guise of an investigation.

How the Scam Works

  • Initial Call: The call may go to voicemail if unanswered, delivering a recorded message that falsely claims a purchase confirmation from eBay.
  • Caller Description: Users have noted various accents, which may include West Asian, indicating a potentially broad operating base.
  • Information Extraction: Once engaged, scammers aggressively pursue sensitive information under the pretense of account verification, which is a common technique used by fraudsters.

Scam

I spoke to two people one female and one male with an West Asian Accent.

They called saying I had a bitcoin purchase on my PayPal for $2.99. I asked them how they have this number, as I don’t have a PayPal account. They couldn’t tell me. I asked them what name is attached to this account, to which they said they can’t give out personal information as they are a junior level. I was transferred over to the senior, where I changed my accent so they couldn’t follow. He asked me more personal questions which I didn’t give out anything, and he asked me to type something random into my App Store so they could track my phone. I lied and didn’t do it. Don’t tell them your name, as they don’t have any information. Do not stay on the phone longer, as they might record it and put it though AI.

Scam

Call center scammers based overseas, pretending to be eBay. If the scammer doesn't hear "hello" it assumes it is talking to message bank and plays a recorded message about a "confirmation of an eBay purchase" and to call the number back. Incoming calls are disabled on this number so nobody is able to call back.

About This Report

This page is part of the Reverseau Scam Intelligence Database, a community-driven dataset maintained by Reverseau since 2014. The database documents caller behaviour across Australian phone numbers based on first-hand user experiences.

Each entry is generated when individuals who received calls or messages from a number submit a report through our review form. Reports include a caller safety rating (1–5 scale) and a written account of the interaction. All submissions are moderated before publication.

The safety rating shown on this page reflects the collective assessment of (02) 5119 8573 by real users. It measures perceived caller risk, not the quality of this page. A low rating indicates that reporters consider this number likely to be associated with scam or spam activity.
