User Experiences: A Pattern Emerges

According to multiple reports from the community, it appears that this number has become active once again in 2023, with several individuals recounting similar experiences. The Tax Scam Behind the Calls

These calls are associated with a scam, primarily revolving around tax-related fears. Scammers commonly leverage the tax season to instil fear and anxiety, urging the recipient to provide personal information or face punitive actions. Here are some strategies to assign this number into a clear classification:

  • No Voicemail Left: The absence of a voicemail is typical of scam operations, as legitimate calls usually aim to leave informative messages.
  • Multiple Reports: Similar reports from users confirm a pattern of behaviour that is consistent with scam calls.
  • Reporting to Authorities: The fact that users have proactively reported this number to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) further supports its classification as dubious.
  • Silent Calls: The disconnect before answers strengthens the belief that this is a scam designed to confirm active numbers for future targeting.

What To Do If You Receive a Call From This Number

If you find yourself on the receiving end of a call from 02 4407 0022:

  • Do not engage: If you answer and hear no response, simply hang up. Engaging with such calls can lead to further unwanted contact.
  • Block the Number: Many users have taken immediate action by blocking this caller, a wise decision to prevent future disturbances.
  • Report the Number: You are encouraged to report any suspicious calls to relevant authorities, including the ATO and local consumer protection agencies.
  • Use Reverseau: To identify similar numbers or report persistent issues, consider utilising resources like Reverseau for a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia.

I have been called multiple times from this number without any message being left. Additionally, I have received several scam calls from a similar number, (02) 4407 0049. I am frustrated and wondering why telecommunications companies are unable to block these types of calls. Even if cloned numbers are being used, why can't legitimate owners be assigned new numbers while redirecting ongoing calls? It would be better if these issues were managed by the Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber Security Centre.

This number called but didn't leave a message. I've now blocked their number, and I appreciate everyone who has reported them on this site.

I picked up a call from this number, but the caller did not say anything. The line dropped after a few seconds, which was unusual.

I appreciate all the comments regarding this number. I'm relieved I didn't answer their call, as it seems suspicious.

Scam

I didn't answer a call from this number as it was unknown to me. After researching online, I discovered numerous reports labeling it as a scam. As a former ATO employee, I can confirm that they do not make phone calls to threaten or charge individuals — all communication is conducted through mail following specific procedures. The language used in these calls is also incorrect.

I have reported this number as a scam to the ATO plus another similar number from a few days ago. In the meantime I have blocked both numbers but expect they will chop and change. Beware!

When I answered the call, there was no response from the other end. Suspecting it was a scam, I promptly blocked the number.

I received a similar call from a number that was just one digit different (02) 4407 0023 a few days ago. I blocked that number and am now blocking this one as well.

Scam

I received a call from this number on my home phone in the mid-morning today, but they didn't leave a message. It is interesting to note that there were several complaints about this number back in 2017, and since then, it has been quiet. However, as it is tax season in 2023, it seems they have started making calls again. I have now blocked this number, but I suspect they might try to use different numbers to bypass the block, so be vigilant.

SCAM SCAM SCAM!! Do not return call a "Mark" is claiming to be investigating due to tax avoidance.... Pretty sure my tax bill from last year states otherwise!!

Same phone call here alleging to be from the ATO with warning of a pending warrant being issued.

Scam

Automated voice, male, British accent, saying I was being audited by the ATO. I hung up. There is no way the ATO would notify citizens about an audit via an automated service.

Surely the Telco's can let the police know who has this number as someone must be paying the phone bill.... I say lock them up with the rest of the crims and leave us alone. By the time I get home of an afternoon the last thing I want is an annoying phone call from these low life parasites.

Luckily my phone has a block feature so I have blocked the number after 4 calls. Spoke to my Tax Accountant who advised if you go through a Taxation Accountant then the Taxation Office would contact them direct and not the person directly.

I

Scam

Just got called. I am an Accountant. Individuals don't have Registered Office addresses. Companies do. And they are quite often the Accountants business address. Or an officer of the company such as the Company Secretary. So the scammers haven't even done their homework effectively! AND the ATO would NEVER breach privacy laws and leave messages with details! Have you ever called the ATO? They ask SEVERAL security questions to verify you are who you say you are...

About This Report

This page is part of the Reverseau Scam Intelligence Database, a community-driven dataset maintained by Reverseau since 2014. The database documents caller behaviour across Australian phone numbers based on first-hand user experiences.

Each entry is generated when individuals who received calls or messages from a number submit a report through our review form. Reports include a caller safety rating (1–5 scale) and a written account of the interaction. All submissions are moderated before publication.

The safety rating shown on this page reflects the collective assessment of (02) 4407 0022 by real users. It measures perceived caller risk, not the quality of this page. A low rating indicates that reporters consider this number likely to be associated with scam or spam activity.
