The number 1300 721 299 / 00721299 has attracted significant attention in recent years, especially among Australian bank customers. Reports from various users indicate that this number is linked to potential scams, particularly impersonating Westpac Banking Corporation. However, there are also claims from users that this number is legitimate, creating confusion among those who receive calls from it.
Based on user experiences reported over the years, we can classify this phone number largely as suspected scam and telemarketing. Many individuals have indicated they received calls asking them to verify personal information, with alarming warnings about account restrictions if they did not comply. These reports highlight a typical type of scam known as phishing, which aims to steal personal information by posing as a trustworthy entity—in this case, a major bank.
Several users rejected claims of legitimacy. One user detailed receiving poorly formatted emails from this number, falsely representing Westpac and threatening to freeze their accounts. Alarmingly, these tactics match known fraudulent schemes intended to manipulate customers into providing sensitive details.
Conversely, some users have asserted that they were indeed able to connect with Westpac's customer service through this number when prompted by legitimate account issues, suggesting that it could also be a valid contact line under certain circumstances. However, those instances are overwhelmed by the red flags raised in the majority of responses. Given that Westpac's official channels typically do not initiate such contact methods and prefer physical letters for sensitive communications, it's prudent to exercise caution.
So, what should you do if you receive a call from 1300 721 299? Here are some recommended steps:
- Do Not Provide Personal Information: If you are contacted by this number, do not share your personal details or account information.
- Verify with Your Bank Directly: If you suspect the call or message might be genuine, contact Westpac directly using a known official number rather than returning the call.
- Stay Informed: Use services like Reverseau and Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to identify the true nature of such unsolicited contacts.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you receive a fraudulent communication, report it to your bank and local authorities to help combat these scams.
In summary, while there are mixed reports regarding 1300 721 299 / 00721299, the prevalent feedback leans towards viewing it as potentially fraudulent. BANK SCAM.
Claiming to be Westpac bank. Sending messages. Saying the same as previously described by others. And the poorly formatted emails. Each SMS says the number of days I have to give them details before my account is restricted. The days don't even add up correctly.
I can't find the number they provided to be linked to the bank anywhere. I rang the bank off their known number and there is nothing pinned to my account and was told to disregard their attempt.
100000% scam. Westpac customer service never call or send email.
They always send paper letter.
This is NOT a scam. I just called Westpac and they transferred me to their Customer Service team. I received sms messages and emails with really poor formatting. My account did get restricted which prompted me to call Westpac. Once connected to the team they asked a few questions about my account and specific transactions to which I answered. Restrictions came off and I’m able to use my account once again.
1300 721 299 Is definitely a scam. I received a poorly formatted email claiming to be Westpac Banking Corporation requiring me to contact them to give additional personal information about me and failure to do so would result in all of my accounts being frozen and I will be removed as signatory from those accounts.
Quite strange considering I don’t hold any Bank accounts with Westpac Bank nor hold any kind of financial interest or debt obligation with them.
Some random fraudulently pretending to be the bank asking me to update/confirm my details. Yeah right, it's 2021 I'm not falling for that!
I sent the email off to the bank for their own records don't fall victim to these lowlifes.
Cold called asking to verify personal info to ensure my bank accounts are up to date.
