Have you received a call from 0430 636 157? If so, you are not alone. This number has been reported by users as a scam call, specifically where the caller impersonates PayPal representatives. Such calls can be alarming, but understanding their nature is key to handling them effectively.

Type of Scam: PayPal Impersonation

Users have described an individual with an Asian accent attempting to engage them in a conversation about purported unauthorised charges made in the USA. The scammer uses melodrama by claiming that a charge of $200 was made for gift cards. They aim to create urgency while asking for personal information, including emails and mobile numbers, to gain the victim's trust.

Red Flags and How to Handle Such Calls

Identifying a scam call can be straightforward if you know what to look for. Consider the following:

  • Caller Weakness: Scammers typically use high-pressure tactics, leading to loud and aggressive communication when questioned.
  • Suspicious Details: They may use familiar company names like PayPal, hoping to confuse victims into thinking they are interacting with a legitimate representative.
  • Verification Attempts: Be especially cautious if they ask you to verify personal details or prompt you to confirm information they should already have.

Safe Practices for Future Calls

Should you encounter a call from this or similar numbers, it is advisable to follow these safe practices:

  • Do Not Engage: If the call feels suspicious, it's best to hang up. Do not provide any personal information.
  • Request Caller Information: Asking the caller for a callback number is a smart tactic. Scammers often hang up when pressed for this kind of information.
  • Verification: For concerns regarding your accounts, always contact the company directly using official contact information rather than following prompts given by the caller.

Someone Asian pretending to be PayPal. Said someone had made a charge of $200 for gift cards in the USA they thought was fake. They had my email and mobile number and were sending fake verification emails and texts so they appeared genuine, would gain my confidence and get more details off me to get into my account. I drove him mad by pretending the texts hadn't come through, so he kept sending them... Hm nope sorry nothing. When I said the email address wasn't mine and, "I have no emails either, sorry, and I have to go," he got loud and pushy telling me to look again and again hahaha. Once I got bored of stringing him along I said again, "I have to get back to work, give me your number and I'll look into it later," he sharply hung up.

*tip - when you ask repeatedly for their number they will hang up without a goodbye, that's how you know it's a scammer for sure!
