Identifying the Threat: 0406 394 289
The phone number 0406 394 289 / 0406394289 has raised significant concerns among users, particularly regarding its association with a common scam tactic. Reports indicate that this number is used by scammers impersonating Visa, attempting to extract sensitive financial information under the guise of protecting users from fraudulent transactions.
Understanding the Scam
Numerous users report receiving pre-recorded voice messages from this number that falsely claim to be from Visa. These messages inform recipients of suspicious transactions, often citing transactions that they did not initiate, such as purchases from eBay or unknown international transactions. This crude tactic plays on consumers' fears about financial theft and compels them to act quickly.
Why Is This Call Classified as a Scam?
- Pre-recorded Messages: Legitimate banks or financial institutions seldom use automated calls without pre-validating the recipient's identity through secure methods. Genuine alerts are typically followed by an SMS or email confirmation.
- Requests for Immediate Action: Scammers thrive on urgency, pressuring victims to take action immediately, such as pressing a button to secure their account. This pressure is a major red flag.
- Clone Numbers: Some reports indicate calls from very similar numbers (e.g., 0406 394 289 / 0406394289 and 0406 393 289), which could hint at a larger scam operation investing in phone number changes to outsmart potential victims.
Protecting Yourself
When receiving a call from 0406 394 289 / 0406394289, it is imperative to ignore it and avoid engaging with the caller. Here are some steps to consider:
- Do Not Press Any Buttons: If you receive a message prompting you to press a number, do not engage. Hang up the call.
- Verify with Your Bank: If you suspect fraud, contact your bank directly using the number on their official website or your statements, not the one provided in the call.
- Report the Number: Use platforms like Reverseau to report this number and check scams and spam reports from other users.
As cybercriminal tactics continue to evolve, awareness and caution remain the best defence. For those in Australia, utilising tools such as Reverse Phone Lookup Australia can help validate suspicious numbers and safeguard personal information. Always remember: your bank wouldn't initiate contact about suspicious activity without verifying your identity through secure channels.

Also got a call from near identical number 0406393289. It was a recorded message from Visa (apparently) saying 1 eBay transaction and 1 international transaction also pending. DO NOT press1, just hang up. Your bank would not just call with a recorded message, they would also text and send message on your netbanking.
I heard a pre-recorded voice message saying they were from Visa and that two transactions had been flagged as suspicious—one from eBay and another for an international transaction. They instructed me to press 1 if I didn’t recognize these charges, but I hung on the line without interacting further, and the call eventually disconnected.
I received a call mentioning a charge on a Visa account, but the issue is that I don’t even have a Visa card!
