Understanding the Risks of Calls from 0401 279 424
The phone number 0401 279 424 has garnered attention in the community for all the wrong reasons. Classified as a scam, this number is associated with callers impersonating Telstra representatives. According to several reports, these scammers tend to operate from outside of Australia, often from locations like India or Pakistan.
How the Scam Works
The modus operandi employed by these scammers is both alarming and sophisticated. They typically initiate calls with claims that your Telstra account is compromised or being misused by external agencies. This tactic is designed to invoke fear and prompt unsuspecting victims into providing personal information.
Typical Approaches and Warning Signs
- Impersonation: Callers specifically claim to be from Telstra, exploiting a sense of trust that many Australians have in their telecommunications provider.
- Urgency: They convey a sense of urgency, urging you to take immediate action to secure your account, which can cloud judgement.
- Remote Access Requests: The most worrying aspect is their request to access your computer using tools like Anydesk. If complied with, this would give them unfettered access to sensitive information like bank details and passwords.
What to Do If You Receive a Call
If you ever receive a call from 0401 279 424, or any number exhibiting similar behaviour, here are actionable steps to protect yourself:
- Do Not Engage: If you suspect a call is from a scammer, simply hang up.
- Verify Independently: Contact Telstra directly through their official channels to verify any claims made during the call.
- Report the Number: Internally document the occurrence, and consider reporting the number to your telecommunications provider or to services like Reverseau, which allows users to carry out a Reverse Phone Lookup in Australia.
- Spread Awareness: Inform friends and family about this number to help protect others from falling victim to this scam.
Being aware is the key to fend off these deceptive tactics. Never freely offer personal information over the phone unless you are certain of the receiver's identity. Taking preventive steps today can safeguard you from the damaging consequences of identity theft and financial loss.

What Our Users Reviewed
This is definitely a scam.
Scammers call from India or Pakistan.
Claim to be from Telstra and suggest your account is being used by foreign agencies etc.
They will then ask you to go to Anydesk and try to get your Any desk Address to remotely access your computer. That would mean they’ll have access to all your passwords and bank details etc.
Be very mindful and don’t fall for it.
