Understanding the Scam

The nature of the scam calls involves an automated message claiming to be from PayPal, often alerting victims about fraudulent activities related to their accounts. As reported by multiple users:

  • Many recipients described receiving a recorded message, often with claims that unauthorized transactions were attempted on their supposed PayPal accounts, despite many victims not even owning an account.
  • When callers engaged with the scam, they were met with representatives who feigned urgency, suggesting immediate action to prevent losses—behavior typical of high-pressure scams.
  • The callers typically had accents indicating a possible connection to business centres overseas, adding another layer of suspicion to the legitimacy of the call.

Recognising the Red Flags

Here are some common red flags indicated by user reviews:

  • Calls from numbers that you do not recognise, especially those that leave automated messages.
  • Pressuring tactics encouraging immediate action or payment to rectify supposed issues.
  • The inability of the callers to verify details related to your actual PayPal account or, for that matter, the absence of any prior welcome communication from PayPal.

Received a voicemail from this number asking me whether or not to authorize a payment of $299.40.

When I phoned back the person with an Indian accent, without asking me for my name, phone number or account name, immediately told me that a Gift Card for the above amount was purchased in my name and that Pay Pal thought it may be a scam. He said that hackers had obviously hacked my phone number. He asked that I put him on speaker and then open the APP Store so that he could block this number from the hackers. I hung up and he then phoned back 6 times When I finally picked up he said he was ringing back from PayPal and that we had been disconnected. I told him he wasn't and that it was a scam and hung up. Haven't heard back.

SCAMMERS. Missed a call and called back. Went to a contact centre in India. Consultant read a spiel saying someone this morning had purchased a gift card on my account for $200 and would I like to cancel the transaction. I asked if they could tell me my account name. They ended the call. I called twice and got the same thing. So I called a third time and let them have it. DO NOT ANSWER.

I answered a recorded message claiming to be from PayPal, which was a robocall trying to trick me into giving up money. How do I know it’s a scam? I don’t even have a PayPal account.

I didn't answer the call because I didn't recognize the phone number. They left a recorded message in my voicemail, which I found suspicious. After researching, I discovered that it seemed related to a PayPal phone scam, which confirmed my instincts. I've blocked the number, but I suspect they're using multiple phone numbers to contact people.
