The phone number 03 8100 6138 / 0381006138 has recently been reported by several users as a suspicious and scam-facilitating number. Callers with foreign accents pose as technicians from Telstra, claiming to address issues with your internet or phone connection. However, the nature of these calls raises significant red flags.

How the Scam Works

In recent reports, individuals received calls where the caller identified himself as a Telstra technician. Interestingly, these calls came through on the landline that was supposedly experiencing issues. Such tactics are meticulously designed to create a façade of legitimacy. This can psychologically manipulate unsuspecting individuals into divulging personal information or following the caller's lead.

Identifying the Scam

  • Caller ID Manipulation: Scammers often adjust Caller IDs to appear as trusted organisations.
  • Urgency and Pressure: The callers may create a sense of urgency around the so-called issue to prompt quick action from the receiver.
  • Unsolicited Calls: Legitimate companies typically do not make unsolicited calls regarding technical issues without prior contact.

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 03 8100 6138

If you receive a call from this number, it is important to remain vigilant:

  • Do Not Engage: Politely hang up on the caller. Engaging can lead to further manipulation or unwanted follow-up calls.
  • Verify with Your Provider: Contact Telstra directly using official contact methods to determine if there are any real issues with your service.
  • Report the Number: Inform the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) or use Reverseau for additional support if you suspect a scam.

Male caller with foreign accent said he was a Telstra technician assigned to fixing a problem with our internet phone connection. Strangely he called on the exact phone we were supposed to be having a problem with.

I told him to go scam someone else & hung up.

A male caller with a foreign accent contacted me, claiming to be a technician from Telstra. He insisted he was addressing an issue with our phone or internet service. When I informed him that we were not Telstra customers, he stubbornly insisted they were the main provider. My concern was heightened as he called our landline, which he claimed was problematic. I told him to find another target for his scam.
