Identifying the Scam

  • The impersonation of government officials: Victims reported that the callers claimed they were from border security or immigration.

I missed a call from this number, and when I returned the call, I heard a recorded message stating I had reached the Department of Foreign Affairs, which was closed since it was Sunday. The number in question is (02) 6264 1111.

This caller repeatedly bombarded me with six calls in a row, followed by calls from a different number four times. It appears to be a scam, as they manipulated caller ID to display a government number I found online. When I answered, I heard the typical scam call beep followed by an Indian voice on the line.

Scammers called me claiming to be from Sydney immigration. However, I was confused because I wasn't aware that immigration services were divided into different suburbs. They spoke Chinese immediately upon answering the call.

The caller claimed to be from the Department of Immigration but became angry when I asked for proof of their identity. Because they refuse to verify their claims, I am suspicious of this call.

The caller claimed to be from immigration and said they had an important document that needed to be picked up in Canberra. They urgently asked me to go there. This seems very suspicious.

I received a letter from the Department of Home Affairs that had this phone number on the letterhead. I attempted to call this number multiple times, but it connects to a switchboard. When transferred to another person, nobody picked up. I reached out to the Minister's office for assistance, but they were unhelpful and suggested I keep calling until I receive a response, claiming they do not have access to the letters.

These guys just called today 27/6/16. Scared he hell out of me initially. Told me my name was on the list of people to be deported for no apparent reason except that I had not updated my details with my passport country. Most of the stuff they were saying did not make sense but what masked it was the fact that both of the fellas were Chinese or Asian and could not speak fluently, yet asked me if I was proficient in English.

Told me to be ready with a list of documents as a Federal officer would be visiting me in the next 15 minutes and I had to provide him all the required stufff. I was asked to provide a Government bond of $8900.00 which would be refunded with a cash cheque if I took the receipt and all docs to the Airport. I could not tell anyone and had to do asked without questions. He had to remain on phone all the time and was speaking with authority. He searched on Google the nearest petrol station in my area where I had to speak to him again before going in.

I finally played along and took the phone with him online to the police station in laverton. Guy never spoke again and hung up. All my hopes for some entertainment dashed.

It's a spam number saying themselves to be the border security police and asking you questions about your bank account later. Will insist you not to put your phone or you will face legal issues. Asking for money deposit or any other way to save you from legal problems which they say may be returned later if you come up clean. Bastards will say you don't talk to anyone saying you are being watched by police or discuss the issue with anyone.

I was saved as I got to know as soon as they talked about bank and money deposit.
