What You Need to Know About 02 4960 8236

The phone number 02 4960 8236 / 0249608236 has become infamous among Australian users, primarily being flagged as a scam. Multiple reports indicate that this number is allegedly linked to various fraudulent activities, particularly those impersonating financial institutions such as American Express and Telstra.

The Nature of the Scam

Users have consistently reported calls from this number claiming to be affiliated with major banks or delivery services, suggesting there are issues with accounts or parcels that require immediate attention. On closer examination, it is clear these calls are trying to create a sense of urgency to elicit sensitive information from unsuspecting individuals. Here are some typical tactics noted:

  • Impersonation of American Express, claiming dubious concerns over card activity.
  • Representatives falsely identifying as Telstra, asserting that the caller's internet security is compromised.
  • Automated messages suggesting issues with rogue parcels or suspicious orders, particularly for accounts the recipient does not hold.

Identifying the Scam

Many users have reported distinctly high-pressure tactics during these calls, with several stating their calls were abruptly ended when denial of service was expressed. This behaviour is indicative of typical scam methodologies wherein scammers make multiple attempts to contact you, as seen in user experiences where the same number called repeatedly within a short span.

The repetitive notification of alarmist scenarios is both a red flag of fraudulent schemes and a call for users to remain vigilant. These tactics are designed to confuse and coerce individuals into providing personal or financial information.

I missed a call from this number while I was overseas. They did not leave a voicemail, which made me assume it wasn’t an important call. After reading other users' experiences, I feel relieved that I didn't spend my roaming credit on what seems to be a scam.

Call on mobile, woman said she was from Telstra Technical Department.

Said there were problems with my mobile and that my browsers were at fault and that I was on "private Mode" and now I was visible to anyone because it was downgraded to "Public Mode".

She mentioned my last two numbers of my mobile.

Very insistant that I Google IP address.

Would not take no for an answer and then I said I would contact Telstra myself. She replied that my internet access on mobile would be disconnected.

I replied "so be it" whereas she hung up. Scam call.
